Shagreen

Posted in Bloggity by laurencorbyn on April 21, 2010

Dying for this beautiful faux shagreen from Celerie Kemble for Valteks.  It comes in some really luscious shades.  I dig this cool turquoise blue.  Though I am opposed to turquoise in theory because it is the color of the year from Pantone.  The opposition, of course, is just in theory.  I think I’ll always be drawn to it.

How cute is this for a kid’s room?  SO CUTE.

I am obsessed with Leontine Linens.  I’m thinking bedding as the big move approaches (I’m keeping specific house info on the down low because nothing is final quite yet).  Our master will likely be not too far off the living area, and I just don’t think my circa 1989 Crate and Barrel comforter will cut it anymore.  Not sure Leontine is in my budget, but it certainly serves as fabulous inspiration. Love the modern take on tradition.  More and more I feel like my style is being defined in that way.  Or maybe tradtition-roughed up.  Tradition messified.  It’s a word.

Anyway, I just can’t get over a good monogram.

Previous Client Work

Posted in Bloggity by laurencorbyn on April 15, 2010

Whew.  Things are crazy around here.  More on that at a later date.  😉

In the meantime, check out some client work I did a while ago.  I don’t think I’ve shared this with you before.  The room turned out rather lovely, though we did stray a bit from the original concept.  We ended up going more traditional and a little moodier with the colors.  I ran into the clients the other day, and they’re still happy!  Always like to hear that.

This board started with that fab Jayson Home and Garden sofa.  The Angelica.  Love it.  We followed with a great buy on a Ralph Lauren leather chair, at once manly and feminine.  The side table belonged to the clients already.

Updated tradition.  I like it. What are your thoughts?

The House Hunt Continues

Posted in Bloggity by laurencorbyn on April 9, 2010

You guys.  Hunting for a house is really frustrating.

On another note, I bought this print by James Griffioen. I’m sure my art choice is completely unrelated to how I feel about house hunting.

Happy Weekend.  This weather calls for a club special ASAP.

Craigslist Love in OKC

Posted in Bloggity by laurencorbyn on April 6, 2010

Feeling Frenchy?  LOVE that second one.  $175, $90 respectively.  Can’t hurt to ask low.

Interesting chairs with a kind of groovy shape.  They’re asking $400 for the buffet, table and chairs.

And a cool table. $245 for table and chairs.  I like the curvy legs.

Snazzy little bar cart so you can style up your place Lonny style.  $25!!!

Snazzy little dresser to paint up as you like. $45.

This sofa has kind of a Billy Baldwin vibe to it.

They’re asking too much, but it’s cute, and they’re willing to bargain.

8×10 rug, $350.

And moving to the less antique-y, finale of our show:

For the patio.  A comfy bargain at $75.  There are so many great outdoor fabrics now, that you can live with these cushions till you find some fabric you love, then slowly add pillows.  Or do a wham, bam, thank you ma’am, presto change-o.

Whew! That’s enough.  And for the record craigslisters…  there’s no such thing as a “leather foot bench.”  It’s an ottoman.  Maybe a footstool.  Most likely an ottoman.

From Ad to Room

Posted in Bloggity by laurencorbyn on April 6, 2010

Saw this ad in Harper’s Bazaar this weekend.  I LOVE it.  Anyone looking for a photo to take to your make up artist for a wedding day look: here it is.  Soft, subtle, natural-plus.   “Natural-plus”  I like that! That’s my look.

When I first talk to potential clients, I encourage them to gather inspiration.  I try to explain that inspiration can come from anything: a vacation spot, a hotel, a concert poster, flower arrangement…  a Chanel ad…  Sometimes this is a concept that is lost on “non-creatives” (for lack of a better term).  I promise though, if you show me an image that you love, I can find inspiration for a room.  It doesn’t have to be a picture of a room or furniture, though that is helpful too of course.

IMMEDIATELY when I thought of turning this ad into a room, I thought of the fabulous Jonathan Berger designed Brooklyn townhouse featured in House Beautiful.  I loved this feminine, fun, space the moment I saw it.  I’m telling you, I am getting SO much girlier as I get older!

I mean, the shot of pink with all the black and white is perfect.  And note the fabulously glossy steps, much like the fabulously glossy lipstick case and the touch of brass on the desk matched to the brassy golden part of the lipstick case.  These are things that work!

I feel like this image really hits home with the inspiration.  Touch of pink (more subtle than the image above) plus the natural flooring and the light flooded room.  It’s classic and current at once, much like the ad.

Below are more images from the “flirty” Brooklyn townhouse.  I think it’s such a great example of tradition with a twist.

It’s almost shocking that this next one is in the same house!  So much calmer with a more organic feeling to it than the other rooms.

Love that Portuguese needlepoint carpet!

So obviously, the ad was just a jumping off point to find some more inspiration.  I think it’s a great way to work.  It’s how I work with clients, talking through images to make sure we’re all speaking the same language.  If someone gives me a Chanel makeup ad as inspiration, I’d gather images and samples that seem to speak to what’s happening in the ad.  I’d go over what I found with my client until something stands out as fabulous to them, and work from there building on the inspirations till we have something original and suited perfectly to the client.

So if I ask you, as a client, to pull images of things you love, don’t hesitate!  It works!

This Rocks Too.

Black Crystals

Posted in Bloggity by laurencorbyn on April 1, 2010

This is what I want for my birthday.  It would look equally fabulous in a light filled, white room as well as a glossy black room.  I swing both ways.  My birthday isn’t until August.

Mathew Studios.  Thanks to Vanessa De Vargas for the fabulous heads up.

I Can’t Get Enough Jonathan Adler (or Party Cups)

Posted in Bloggity by laurencorbyn on April 1, 2010

I need these.  NEED.  And (to my husband) yes, I do understand the difference between need and want.  But seriously, what adult Easter basket would be complete without a set?

Not too long ago, my adult brother and mom made up a rap called “Party Cup.”  I think this is what they were talking about.  And though my brother is a burgeoning rockstar, I think he needs to leave the raps to someone else.  No idea what was in their party cups at the time.

And because every Leo needs a crown:
